Preservation Awards

Rehabilitation.

This award recognizes projects emphasizes the retention and repair of historic materials, but more latitude is provided for replacement because it is assumed the property is more deteriorated prior to work. There is also the understanding for the need to alter or add to a historic property to meet continuing or changing uses while retaining the property's historic character.

Preservation.

This award recognizes projects placing a high premium on the retention of all historic fabric through conservation, maintenance, and repair. It respects a building’s continuum over time, and through successive occupancies, and the respectful changes and alterations that are made. Preservation focuses on the maintenance and repair of existing historic materials and retention of a property's form as it has evolved over time.

Adaptive Reuse.

This award recognizes projects focusing on the retention of materials from the most significant time in a property’s history, while permitting the removal of materials from other periods. Restoration depicts a property at a particular period of time in its history, while removing evidence of other periods.

Complementary Addition.

This award recognizes projects where an addition was made to an existing property or building in a manner that is respectful to the property’s historic past. Projects will be judged on careful attention to design, craftsmanship, architecture, as well as materials used.

Craftsman.

This award recognizes a craftsman, tradesperson, or design professional who has made a lasting contribution to restoring and preserving the built environment in Fargo-Moorhead.
